Shazam is a service that can identify music, movies, , and television shows, based on a short sample played and using the microphone on the device.[1] The software is available for Windows, macOS and smartphones.[2] Shazam Entertainment Limited was founded in 1999 by Chris Barton, Philip Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang, and Dhiraj Mukherjee.[3]

In December 2013, according to its CEO, Shazam was one of the top ten most popular apps in the world.[4]

As of August 2014, the Shazam app had more than 100 million monthly active users and had been used on more than 500 million mobile devices.[5]

In October 2014, Shazam announced its technology has been used to identify 15 billion songs.[6]

In October 2016, Shazam announced its mobile apps have been downloaded more than 1 billion times, and users have performed more than 30 billion “Shazams” since launch.[7]
